Shikakai is a climbing shrub of the Fabaceae family, which has always been used as a natural shampoo. Its powder, made from leaves and bark, in contact with water creates a soft foam that cleans the hair, without changing their natural pH and leaving them extremely soft. Known in Ayurveda for its natural detergent and foaming properties. Literally means "Fruit For Hair", it has always been used as a natural shampoo for healthy hair in ancient Indian tradition.

Hair: This herb is a natural astringent and therefore promotes the health of the scalp, keeping it clean and fresh, it helps to counteract dandruff and strengthens the roots of the hair stimulating its growth. It's a great conditioner, so it helps to untangle the hair. Regular use of Shikakai prevents split ends and makes the hair thick and robust. In addition to saponins, it contains a high percentage of tannins that give it antibacterial and antioxidant properties.

HISTORY and CURIOSITY: In the Indian tradition, women perform a scalp massage with coconut oil or castor oil, which is left to act for 2 or 3 hours, and then removed with a shampoo or a pack with Shikakai.

HOW TO USE: Mix the powder with very hot water until you get to the consistency of a yogurt, add any other herbs. Cover and allow to macerate for 20 minutes. Apply the paste on wet hair if you use it as a shampoo, then massage the skin with circular movements. Apply what remains even on the lengths. Leave on for 10 minutes and rinse thoroughly. A final rinse with water and vinegar helps keep the hair shiny and soft.

Note: Shikakai is good for all types of hair, but for those that tend to dry, we recommend using it sparingly and adding Amla.
