The Indian Robbia is a climbing plant of the Rubiaceae family; from its root we obtain a natural red colorant. It is also known by the name of Garanza, or with the name Manjistha, in Ayurveda. It promotes healing of skin tissues damaged by injury or infection. It detoxifies and nourishes at the same time.

Manjistha powder is commonly used to help lighten dark skin spots and other types of discoloration. Use manjistha powder in combination with Damascene Rose powder to make a healing and refreshing pack.

HAIR: On the scalp has a purifying effect and makes the hair shiny and soft. Strengthens the tissues and protects against itching.

DYEING NOTES: Suitable for getting brigh red tones. It is possible to vary the hue by adjusting the pH of the environment in which we prepare the powder: adding lemon juice and letting the Robbia oxidize for at least 12 hours, warmer tones are obtained, while adding a teaspoon of bicarbonate will result in colder shades.

The dyeing power of Robbia is not very high and it is not permanent; for this you can also mix with Henna, varying the percentages to obtain very warm coppery tones. Recommended for blonde hair and very light brown to get blond, golden or warm tones. By adding Curcuma or Rhubarb, orange tones will be obtained instead. In combination with the Cassia it is useful to revive blond tones.

SKIN: Besides the dyeing properties, Robbia is useful on skin affected by dermatitis, psoriasis, vitiligo, acne or eczema. It also tends to make the complexion of the face more homogeneous, eliminating imperfections and compacting the complexion.

HISTORY and CURIOSITY: its Sanskrit name is Manjishta. In Ayurveda it is considered the main remedy to cleanse the body of toxins.

HOW TO USE: Mix the powder with boiling water, until you get a paste of the consistency of a yogurt for bright tones, or more liquid for mild colors. Allow 15 minutes to soak well covered, then apply the paste on dry hair. Add any other herbs for a synergistic effect. Leave on for at least 2 hours as a dye pack. A final rinse with water and vinegar helps keep the hair shiny and soft. As a face mask mix with herbs and / or clay to avoid unpleasant chromatism. Leave on for 10 minutes without drying the mask, but keep the skin moist by delivering water or floral water.

Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.

Note: the Robbia proposed here is the Rubia cordifolia and not the Rubia tincoria considered toxic, the use of which is not admitted as a supplement and as a cosmetic.
